Terrorism: Presidency (Nigeria) denies Hijab ban

Image
T he Presidency has denied that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was considering banning the hijab , the Muslim women’s dressing symbol of modesty if suicide bombers continue use it as cover to commit atrocities. President Buhari had during his maiden media chat last year, hinted that his government may ban the use of hijab by muslim women as a result of the use of female suicide bombers by Boko Haram insurgents. “ Hijab would have to be banned if suicide bombing continues,” he had responded to a question posed by one of the panelist. Hijab is a veil that covers the head and chest, which is particularly worn by some Muslim woman beyond the age of puberty in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family and, according to some interpretations, in the presence of adult non-Muslim females outside of their immediate family. Violence: From Prey to Perpetrator to Protector: Taiwo Akinlami

Image
“I’m still an abnormal adult,” Taiwo Akinlami, an accomplished Lagos-based lawyer, says about his traumatic exposure to violence as a child. Half of Nigeria’s children suffer physical violence before they turn 18, according to a recently published nation-wide survey. How does this violence affect their life and being? “What you do to a child,” says Akinlami, “becomes part of the child’s soul.” The 45-year-old lawyer regretfully looks back at the times he has hurt others, replicating the violence he was exposed to as a child. Now, he is canvassing across the nation to protect children from violence. “My father was a good person”, says Mr. Akinlami, “But unfortunately he did not know how to bring up children.” He will never forget how his father flogged him as a child: “He would tie my legs and tie my hands, and he would strip me naked”. The punishment often took long. “He would give me six strokes of the cane, go and sit down, come back and give me another six strokes...

Gambia declared as an Islamic Republic

Image
Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has declared the formerly secular country an Islamic republic in a move he said was designed to distance the West African state further from its colonial past. The tiny sliver of a country, named after the river from which British ships once allegedly fired cannonballs to fix its borders, joins the ranks of other Islamic Republics such as Iran and Afghanistan. “In line with the country’s religious identity and values, I proclaim Gambia as an Islamic state,” said Jammeh on state television. “As Muslims are the majority in the country, the Gambia cannot afford to continue the colonial legacy,” he added. Gambia’s population of 1.8 million people is 95 percent Muslim. He said that other citizens of other faiths would still be able to practice. Source: Naijaloaded
