Two new studies published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships found that couples who place a high value on friendship with their partner are more committed, more in love, and more sexually satisfied than those who aren’t friends with their B...

Too Bad! 5 Ways Adult Children Hurt Their Parents Without Realizing It

Image
Most people love and appreciate their parents. We don’t doubt that. The problem is, parents can’t tell this unless you show it by the way you treat them. Sometimes adult children can bring heartache to their parents without realizing what they’re doing. We’ve boiled it down to five main ways this happens. If you are a parent of adult children, you may recognize some of these. If you’re the adult child, you may be in for an awakening. As parents age, their physical needs may change but their need for your love never does. Check to see if you’re doing any of these. 1. You don’t call them much Time just flits by, and you realize it’s been a month since you last called your parents to check on them or to share what’s happening in your life. You may be thinking, well, they can call me anytime they want. There’s no question; parents need to call their children, as well.

Violence: From Prey to Perpetrator to Protector: Taiwo Akinlami

“I’m still an abnormal adult,” Taiwo Akinlami, an accomplished Lagos-based lawyer, says about his traumatic exposure to violence as a child. Half of Nigeria’s children suffer physical violence before they turn 18, according to a recently published nation-wide survey. How does this violence affect their life and being? “What you do to a child,” says Akinlami, “becomes part of the child’s soul.” The 45-year-old lawyer regretfully looks back at the times he has hurt others, replicating the violence he was exposed to as a child. Now, he is canvassing across the nation to protect children from violence. “My father was a good person”, says Mr. Akinlami, “But unfortunately he did not know how to bring up children.” He will never forget how his father flogged him as a child: “He would tie my legs and tie my hands, and he would strip me naked”. The punishment often took long. “He would give me six strokes of the cane, go and sit down, come back and give me another six strokes...

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg Write: “A letter to our daughter”

Image
Dear Max, Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in. Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. While headlines often focus on what’s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation. We believe all lives have equal value, and that includes the many more people who will live in future generations than live today. Our society has an obligation to invest now t...

Photo credit: 360nobs.com While we can all agree that nobody is perfect, there are actually a few things that would adversely affect a relationship if a man chooses to partner with a woman with some not-so-great attributes. The nectars  presents you with the 10 kinds of woman a man should think twice about making a wife. 1. The Bitter Woman : You know that woman that always seems to be angry at the menfolk all the time? Perhaps she has had her heart broken one too many times, but this woman is always bashing on men and talking about how they are no-good or useless. A man might not want to settle down with someone so bitter as it is guaranteed that when the opportunity arises, she would hurl hurtful insults and intense, hateful words his way due to all her unresolved anger. 2. The Selfish Woman : If you want a happy home and a partner that wants your happiness as well as hers, then you should steer clear of the selfish woman. A woman wh...
